On Friday Digital Manga Publishing’s yuri imprint Lilyka held its first live event, which consisted of an hour watching mangaka Mintaro draw and answer questions from the audience during a livestream. The picture she drew and colored in is above.
Viewers could type in their questions, and an interpreter who goes by Bishie Sensei translated the questions for Mintaro and then translated her answers back to the audience. It gave viewers a chance to get to know her better as a person.
Asked why she did yuri as opposed to other genres, Mintaro said that even before she was aware yuri manga was a thing, she really enjoyed drawing girls so it became a natural transition. She really likes the manga Sweet Blue Flowers, which is in the yuri vein, and that was a good starting place for her. She also likes that in yuri manga there are often complicated emotions and difficult to convey feelings and sentiments.
Her favorite fairy tale is The Little Mermaid. She said she has lots of Little Mermaid items around.
She likes drawing hands because even though they’re difficult to draw, it’s very satisfying when you get them right.
She likes bright and bouncy characters. But she ends up drawing a lot of characters with darker personalities too.
She’d always been drawing since she was little, but she really started drawing a lot when she was around 6-years-old. She liked drawing her dog and all his expressions. (The dog she has now is named Milk.) She also tried to imitate Hunter X Hunter.
Toward the end of the event, Mintaro also alluded to a shikishi autograph event coming up. Lilyka will soon sell the video as a product on Mintaro’s page.
