Otaku. We’ve written many posts about the various ways the word has been used over the years, and how attitudes toward people with geeky interests has evolved.
Here’s the latest word from a poll conducted in Japan by marriage consulting firm Partner Agent. The poll, which collected information from 1,500 single men and women in their teens to 30s, wielded a whole bunch of interesting otaku-related data.
The biggest headline: about half of people in their 20s would be fine with dating or marrying someone with otaku interests. In comparison, only 43% of people in their 30s would accept an “otaku” partner.
But it also depends what kind of otaku one is. Manga, anime and video games all ranked as reasonably acceptable, but otaku chiefly into two-dimensional girls or boys love were ranked as less desirable: 13.4% and 16.6%, respectively.
Participants were also asked if they considered themselves “otaku,” to which an incredible 72% of people in their teens responded yes. It sounds as if young folks in Japan are definitely becoming more comfortable with the label.
