The 14 th and 15 th Pokémon movies came to the U.S. in English-dubbed editions in December 2011 after attaining the second and third spots in the ranking of the year’s domestic box office hits in Japan (beaten only by Studio Ghibli’s latest, From Up …Read more »
Propaganda is a powerful and dangerous tool. This is an argument that few would disagree with, and it's this concern over the potential impact of Hetalia that Daryl Surat raises in his feature coverage of the theatrical film Paint It, White! in the February 2012 …Read more »
Let’s get one thing out of the way: I frankly don’t know much about K-On! and have minimal emotional attachment to the antics of the five members making up the Hokago Tea Time. I can already foresee some furious fan, clattering away at their keyboard …Read more »
If you had a chance to read our cover story on Fairy Tail in the latest issue of Otaku USA , then you probably already have a good idea of whether or not the series is for you. Heck, at this point you may be …Read more »
Fairy tales are fearsome and cruel. Don’t let the Disney-fied versions fool you; the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen penned little morality plays that had all of the subtlety of a mace to the face and all of the delicacy of an abattoir. And …Read more »
I remember Astro Skate, the local roller-rink: the scent of sweat and canvas, the texture of worn plastic wheels, the sound of syrupy, bubblegum pop blaring from the speakers. But most of all I remember the arcade games, especially Street Fighter II: The World Warrior …Read more »
Allow me to make this abundantly clear: everything you will ever read about Birth is a lie. The ad copy on the back of the DVD case mentions a ruined world, a war between the planet Aqualoid and “an invading army of mechanical monsters”, and …Read more »
Zombie-related entertainment used to be something I would flock to blindly; all I needed was a hint that the shambling dead would be present and I was ready and rarin'. Sadly, as is the case with most great things—like ninjas, pirates and cats—the Internet has …Read more »

Perhaps it’s just the nostalgia talking, but I believe the eighties were a magical time for anime, when production budgets were padded out by the laughter of unicorns and all the tedious in-betweening was accomplished by teams of mystical pixies high on fairy dust. Then …Read more »
Goro Miyazaki has to be the unluckiest man in the anime industry. His legendary parentage aside, no one could envy his position of having been promoted from landscape architect to suddenly directing a movie based on an epic fantasy universe spanning a half-dozen books. …Read more »
In this age of Internet streaming, it’s easy to forget that only a few scant years ago, the most efficient way to experience anime was to collect it on home video in such formats as VHS, laserdisc, and DVD. This required disposable income, dedication, and …Read more »
