When we think of magical fighters in anime, we tend to thing of girls. Sailor Moon, Madoka, and many more top the list. But it’s not just girls having all the fun… there are a fair few magical boys in the anime world, and they’re just as ready to fight!
Here are a few of our favorites, as well as a look at a new series coming this spring. Who are some of your favorites?
Magical Girl Ore
Magical boys are par for the course in Magical Girl Ore, a manga-turned-anime that rethinks the whole concept of powered-up transformations. This mahou shoujo pastiche sees its heroines turning into hench male versions of themselves, the better to flex on their enemies. How well does it work? Depends on what kind of fight you’re looking for… if gory and brutal, then you’ve come to the right place.
The anime adaptation of Magical Girl Ore even added two anime-exclusive lads to the mix. Idols Michiru and Ruka transform into Magical Girls Eternal Dangerous Pretty and Everything Crazy Beauty, adding two more doses of muscle (and romantic drama) to the mix.
Kaitou Sinbad, Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne
Not all magical boys are clear-cut heroes. Chiaki Nagoya — Kaitou Sinbad in Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne — has his own agenda throughout the series. The twisty-turny plot of Arina Tanemura’s original manga means that there are lots of secrets to discover, and even our leads don’t have all the pieces of the puzzle for a long time.
Of course, rivalry isn’t all that’s on the table. Chiaki’s interactions with Maron (a.k.a. Jeanne) largely seem to have ulterior motives. But he sure does have a hard time staying on task when he’s around her. It seems love can bloom even on the battlefield.
Fairy Ranmaru
If we’ve gotten you in the mood for magical boys by now, good news… there’s a whole new anime starting soon just for you! Fairy Ranmaru kicks off this April, and tells the story of five young men who heal their clients’ hearts. The price? Stealing said hearts. Though our hearts already feel pretty stolen just from a look at the art.
These five lads have some very cool transformations. We can’t wait to see them in action, as well as just what the staff of the mysterious “Bar F” does for their clients.
