US Manga Sales More Than Doubled in 2021

US Manga Sales More Than Doubled in 2021Did you buy a volume of manga in 2021? You’re in good company—and a lot of it.

According to ICv2, US manga sales went up by more than double in 2021 versus 2020. Specifically, 15 million more units sold in 2021 than 2020, for a total of 24.4 million units.

What’s more, thanks to some weirdness when it comes to issues of My Hero Academia, it’s quite possible numbers were actually higher than that for both 2020 and 2021.

As industry watchers are aware, manga is far outselling comics from publishers like Marvel and DC, usually making up the entire Top 20 list for any given month. In December 2021, for example, the top 20 was dominated by properties like Chainsaw Man, Jujutsu Kaisen, Demon Slayer and Attack on Titan.

ICv2’s numbers are courtesy NPD BookScan, which covers about 85% of the US trade print book market.
