The Super Mario Bros. franchise has just turned 35, and Nintendo shows no signs of slowing down their work with Mario and Luigi. After a few years of teasing about a Mario Bros. animated film, it just announced that the movie is scheduled to be released in 2022.

According to Anime News Network, Nintendo and Universal Studios are behind the project, with Universal subsidiary Illumination Entertainment working on the adaptation. Super Mario Bros. creator Shigeru Miyamoto is co-producing, and, according to Illumination founder Chris Meledandri, Miyamoto is “front and center in the creation of this film.” This, he says, makes it different from many other Hollywood movies where the original creator is not involved.

Despite how much COVID is slowing other things down, that doesn’t seem to be the case here, as Nintendo also said that “production is moving ahead smoothly” for Mario and Luigi and the Mario Bros. animated film. Maybe they have mushrooms to keep them going!
