Paramount Pulls Sonic Sequel’s Opening in Russia Over Ukraine Invasion

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is all set to be released in theaters on April 8, but Paramount has decided it will not be released in Russia then. This is part of increasing motions, including both government sanctions and entertainment boycotts, meant to hurt Russia as a result of President Putin’s current invasion of Ukraine.

Paramount put out an official statement, saying, “As we witness the ongoing tragedy in Ukraine, we have decided to pause the theatrical release of our upcoming films in Russia, including The Lost City, and Sonic the Hedgehog 2. We stand by all those impacted by the humanitarian crisis across Ukraine, Russia, and our international markets and will continue to monitor the situation as it unfolds.”

The studio made this move after Disney, Warner Brothers and Sony all made similar decisions not to air their upcoming movies in Russia.

The MPA also put out a statement:

“The Motion Picture Association stands with the international community in upholding the rule of law and condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. On behalf of our member companies, who lead the film, TV and streaming industry, we express our strongest support for Ukraine’s vibrant creative community who, like all people, deserve to live and work peacefully. We will continue to monitor the situation, working closely with our members and partners throughout the global creative sector.”

The original Sonic the Hedgehog movie made almost $11 million in Russia, a country with a big box office. This is Paramount’s description of the sequel:

“After settling in Green Hills, Sonic is eager to prove he has what it takes to be a true hero. His test comes when Dr. Robotnik returns, this time with a new partner, Knuckles, in search for an emerald that has the power to destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a globe-trotting journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands.

From the filmmakers behind The Fast and the Furious and Deadpool, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 stars James Marsden, Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally, and Jim Carrey returning, alongside new additions Shemar Moore, with Idris Elba as the voice of Knuckles, and Colleen O’Shaughnessey as the voice of Tails.”
