No way around it: the end (and beginning) of a year is always list-heavy.
This one’s a bit different, though, in that it has nothing to do with 2016. Nope, this is something a bit more ambitious. Music and entertainment magazine Paste has put together a list of the 100 greatest anime films of all time.
You’ll probably want to bookmark this sucker.
The list, which was co-written by Adult Swim/Toonami mastermind Jason DeMarco, is an attempt to “create a primer of 100 of the most influential and essential films that Japanese animation has produced, and to offer a thorough aesthetic, technical and historical breakdown of why these films matter” and “offer newcomers a comprehensive guide through to learn, rediscover, and explore the fullness that the genre of Japanese animation has to offer.”
Sounds good to me.
The list spans decades of studios, directors and franchises, and, at 100 titles, it’s pretty darn comprehensive (I’ll be the first to admit I haven’t seen all this flicks).
For those who want to skip the best of the best, here’s Paste’s top 10:
10. Neo-Tokyo
9. My Neighbor Totoro
8. Patlabor 2
7. Perfect Blue
6. The Wind Rises
5. Paprika
4. Ghost in the Shell
3. Grave of the Fireflies
2. Spirited Away
1. Akira
That’s my kind of list, man.
How many of Paste’s 100 films have you seen?
