Anime production house Science SARU (DAN DA DAN, Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!) announced that it’s working on a new anime based on Masamune Shirow’s Ghost in the Shell back in May 2024, and now we have another quick look at what’s to come. A new trailer and visual recently dropped for what’s being stylized as THE GHOST IN THE SHELL, currently set to drop as a TV series sometime in 2026.

THE GHOST IN THE SHELL Teaser Trailer

Visual:

DAN DA DAN assistant director Mokochan serves as director, with Toh EnJoe (Godzilla Singular Point) on scripts and series composition and Shuhei Handa (Spriggan TV anime) on character designs and chief animation direction.

Original creator Masamune Shirow shared the following comments:

Anime adaptation-wise, this new THE GHOST IN THE SHELL marks the fourth version following those by Oshii, Kamiyama, and Kise. Alternatively, if we separate GHOST IN THE SHELL and Innocence, categorize the S.A.C. series into Seasons 1, 2, and Solid State Society, divide ARISE into its own series along with The New Movie, and split SAC_2045 into Seasons 1 and 2, this would be the tenth adaptation overall.

Considering the shift in production staff, one could even consider this the first installment of a second generation. The original manga is quite old, so I ask for your understanding on that point (sorry!). That said, I sincerely hope this will once again be an enjoyable visual experience in some form.

Kodansha USA publishes the Ghost in the Shell manga by Shirow Masamune and describes it like so:

Deep into the twenty-first century, the line between man and machine has been inexorably blurred as humans rely on the enhancement of mechanical implants and robots are upgraded with human tissue. In this rapidly converging landscape, cyborg superagent Major Motoko Kusanagi is charged to track down the craftiest and most dangerous terrorists and cybercriminals, including “ghost hackers” who are capable of exploiting the human/machine interfance and reprogramming humans to become puppets to carry out the hackers’ criminal ends. When Major Kusanagi tracks the cybertrail of one such master hacker, the Puppeteer, her quest leads her into a world beyond information and technology where the very nature of consciousness and the human soul are turned upside down.
