Monster Hunter’s release date got bumped around a few times, until it was ultimately released in America on December 18. It ended up coming in first place at the box office, pulling in a profit of $2.2 million.
Anime News Network remarked that director Paul W.S. Anderson’s Resident Evil movies have all opened making more than three times that in their first weekend. However, unless you’re Demon Slayer, movies are not making their usual amounts because of COVID.
Monster Hunter spent about $60 million in production costs. It was pulled from Chinese theaters because of an ad-libbed line by Chinese-American actor Jin Au-Yeung that he meant as a source of Chinese pride, but it was generally interpreted there as an insult. In response to the backlash, the people behind the movie chose to pull the line from all versions, including the English version currently playing in America.
