Comics, Cosplay and Long Lines at Comic Market 91 [Photo Report]
That’s a wrap for day one of Comic Market 91.
The long-running celebration of fan-made manga, games, animation and more that goes by Comiket for short is on in Tokyo, and we made our way there today to peruse, schmooze and, most importantly, snap some photos. Here’s a look at the comics, cosplay and masses of otaku humanity on display at this year’s Comiket.
Some fun Comiket facts:
- Comiket 1 was held in 1975, with a total of 32 doujinshi groups (“circles”) and 700 attendees. The convention now regularly attracts over 500,000 participants.
- There’s an entire self-publishing industry based around Comiket, with small printing companies depending largely on the event to stay in business.
- Comiket is held twice a year, meaning the 100th Comiket will take place in the summer of 2021. Get pumped.
