The Japanese website Comic Natalie put out a survey titled the “Shonen Sunday and Sunday Web Every Heroine General Election.”
Rather than let the survey be a free-for-all of every female character with some prominence in the storyline, Comic Natalie then put out a list of 101 female characters who were published in Shonen Sunday between 1980 and 2023 and asked people who their favorites were. For 10 days about 275,000 votes were cast, and we have the winners.
Before we go on, think of who you’d pick. (And for a hint, the top winners are from the same franchise — try to guess!)
Coming in at tenth place is Aoi Nogami from Zettai Karen Children (Psychic Squad).
In ninth place was Lum from Urusei Yatsura, who has recently seen a new reboot of her anime.
Eighth place went to Princess Syalis of Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle.
Miku of Aishiteiru Game wo Owarasetai nabbed seventh place.
The sixth most popular heroine is Kanon Nakagawa from The World God Only Knows.
Fifth place went to Nazuna Nanausa from Yofukashi no Uta.
Ayumi Yoshida of Case Closed (Detective Conan) received the fourth place spot.
Okay, we’re now in the top three! Third place went to Kagome Higurashi, the heroine of Inuyasha.
First and second place, like fourth place, went to girls from Case Closed. The second place spot went to Ai Haibara and Ran Mori got enough votes to reign at the number one spot in the survey.
What do you think of these results?
VIZ Media publishes Case Closed in English, and gave this description for the first volume:
“Ghastly beheadings, bloody murders, and coldhearted child abductions–
Precocious high school student Jimmy Kudo uses his keen powers of observation and astute intuition to solve mysteries that have left law enforcement officials baffled. Hot on the trail of a suspect, Jimmy is accosted from behind and fed a strange chemical which physically transforms him into a grade schooler! Taking on the pseudonym Conan Edogawa, he attempts to track down the people who did this to him. But until he finds a cure for his bizarre condition, Jimmy continues to help the police solve their toughest cases.
Can you crack the case before Conan does?”
