There’s a new Kunihiko Ikuhara project on the way.
That’s the word from director Ikuhara himself, who participated in a New York Comic Con Metaverse chat this weekend.
Ikuhara said that he’s “working on my next work right now” during the panel, a retrospective looking back on Revolutionary Girl Utena, one of Ikuhara’s most celebrated works.
The director didn’t offer many details about the new anime, but said that he “always tries not to forget the sense of freedom that Utena gave” while working on new anime.
Aside from Utena, Ikuhara is also known for Penguindrum, Yurikuma Arashi and Sarazanmai, which was broadcast last year. ANN recently reported that in his early years, he probably directed some episodes of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles too. What a guy.
If you’re a fan of Utena, the whole panel, which also includes Chiho Saito, is definitely worth a look!
Here’s how Funimation describes Sarazanmai:
Tasked by an otherworldly spirit with fighting Kappa zombies and the temptations of magical wish-granting plates, three middle school boys discover the dangers of secrets, the power of deep human connections, and the pull of desire.
