Tentai Books, Publisher of Light Novels, to Shutter

Tentai Books, Publisher of Light Novels, to ShutterA bummer for fans of light novels like World Teacher and Welcome to the Outcast’s Restaurant!. Tentai Books, which has been publishing English-translated light novels since 2020, is closing its virtual doors.

The company will close “over the next few months,” and plans to keep its website open so owners of digital versions of novels can continue to access them. Rights to ongoing series are being negotiated for transfer to other pubs.

Other series offered by Tentai include Don’t mind me, Sensei! Give yourself a hand!, From Toxic Classmate to Girlfriend Goals, There’s no way a side character like me could be popular, right?, and Turning the Tables on the Seatmate Killer!.

Over on Bluesky, Denpa boss and keen industry watcher Ed Chavez wrote of news that Tentai was “too small a company to really be canary in a coal mine” but that “the quality of titles is not improving despite quantity almost out of hand.”

Here’s wishing the staff of Tentai the best in their future endeavors and that fans of their titles can continue to enjoy them somewhere.
