Good news, everyone! Ranma 1/2 returns this October. The classic Rumiko Takahashi rom-com made a splash in the 1980s in both its manga and anime form. Now, a whole new generation of fans gets to enjoy this bizarre, beloved story.
With a new season come tons of new characters… or, rather, characters who will be familiar to long-time fans. Whether you’re a new viewer, a returning fan who needs a refresher, or just curious about what season 2 holds, join us as we meet the most recently announced cast members!
Mousse
It’s a beautiful day in Nerima, and he is a horrible… duck. Next season, Ranma 1/2 introduces Mousse, a childhood friend of Amazon girl Shampoo. If you recall, she took off rather suddenly at the end of season 1 after learning Ranma’s secret. She’ll be back, accompanied by Mousse as Ranma’s latest self-proclaimed rival. He’s in love with Shampoo, you see.
Oh, there’s one other thing. Mousse is cursed, too. He fell into the Spring of Drowned Duck thanks to his terrible eyesight. He doesn’t let that slow him down, though. Even as a duck, he’s armed to the teeth… er, beak. Meaning even this waterfowl could pose a challenge for Ranma. Toshihiko Seki reprises his role from the 1989 anime in the upcoming season!
Ukyo Kuonji
So, remember how Ranma 1/2 kicked off with Genma Saotome and Soun Tendo arranging a marriage between their kids? Well, Genma’s memory isn’t all that great. Because Soun isn’t the only person he made this deal with. Meet Ukyo, the daughter of an okonomiyaki cart owner. She and Ranma sparred together when they were children, not realizing that their dads were making arrangements. (The okonomiyaki cart thrown in as a dowry sweetened the deal.)
Sadly, Ukyo’s original voice actress is no longer with us. Hiromi Tsuru, who also voiced Bulma in Dragon Ball for more than 30 years, passed away in 2017. Stepping into the role this time will be Kaori Nazuka, who currently voices Suirei in The Apothecary Diaries.
Happosai
Right. This guy. One thing about Ranma 1/2 is that it has this recurring character whose main trait is that he really, really likes panties. To the point that he was something of a meme in and of himself in the Wild West days of the internet. Well, Happosai is back next season, now voiced by Kazuhiko Inoue (who played the ice-skating Mikado Sanzenin in the 1989 series).
Don’t be fooled, though: Happosai is a martial arts master. In fact, he’s the founder of the Anything Goes School of Martial Arts. Thus, his arrival at the Tendo Dojo absolutely terrified Genma and Soun. But his martial arts prowess doesn’t cancel out his lechery, and Ranma has no problem standing up to the little guy. With the number of young ladies in Ranma’s orbit, everyone is going to have to be on their guard.
Ranma 1/2 season 2 premieres in October.
