Michael Arias to Direct Adaptation of Taiyo Matsumoto’s Sunny

Michael Arias to Direct Adaptation of Taiyo Matsumoto’s SunnySome fascinating news: Michael Arias, the director of Tekkonkinkreet, is adapting another manga from the legendary manga-ka Taiyo Matsumoto.

This time, Arias is tackling Sunny, Matsumoto’s manga about a foster home in 1970s Japan.

The film is listed as being in Japanese and produced by GKIDS, the US-based producer and distributor recently acquired by Toho. According to Catsuka, the film is being animated at Dwarf, one of Japan’s premier studios for stop-motion animation.

Aside from helming Tekkonkinkreet, Arias is known for his visual effects work, for directing the live-action film Heaven’s Door and co-directing the anime film Harmony. Arias has also translated many of Matsumoto’s manga into English, including Sunny. He co-wrote the upcoming animated film by Werner Herzog, The Twilight World.

The manga ran in Japan from 2010 to 2015, and was compiled into six volumes.

2029 is a few years away, but I’m really looking forward to this film.

Here’s how Viz describes Sunny:

What is Sunny? Sunny is a car. Sunny is a car you take on a drive with your mind. It takes you to the place of your dreams. Sunny is the story of beating the odds, in the ways that count. It’s the brand-new masterwork from Eisner Award-winner Taiyo Matsumoto, one of Japan’s most innovative and acclaimed manga artists. Translated by Tekkonkinkreet film director Michael Arias!
