While we wait for the latest anime film from director Mamoru Hosoda, one of his previous hits is making a comeback in an unexpected way. A musical adaptation has been announced for Hosoda’s 2015 feature Bakemono no Ko, AKA The Boy and the Beast, with performances set to begin on April 30, 2022.
Renowned theater company Gekidan Shiki is behind the production, which is already billed as the largest scale new original musical show in the company’s 70-year history. Performances will take place at JR-East Shiki Theater AKI in Tokyo, which has a capacity of 1,200.
Gekidan Shiki will be holding auditions for the musical’s child actors, who will take on childhood roles for lead characters Kyuta/Ren, Ichirohiko, and Jiromaru, between August 19 and 22.
Here’s a message from Mamoru Hosoda:
I am very honored that the animation film “The Boy and The Beast” by Studio Chizu will be adapted into a musical by the members of Shiki Theatre Company. I’ve heard that it will be performed next spring, and I’m looking forward to seeing what kind of show it will be. I hope that many people will be able to see it.
