Evangelion 3.0+1.0 Makes 3.3 Billion Yen in First Week

Evangelion 3.0+1.0 Makes 3.3 Billion Yen in First WeekBox office watchers, check this out. The box office numbers for Evangelion 3.0+1.0 are in, and they’re pretty huge.

The film opened last Monday, March 8—a date set to coincide with the end of the state of emergency in Tokyo and other big prefectures. That state of emergency ended up being extended in Tokyo and its surrounding areas, though, meaning theaters in Japan’s most populous region had to close by 8PM.

Nevertheless, fans (including this one) got up at odd hours and braved the danger to see the last Eva film—a lot of them. In the week since the film came out, 2.19 million people have seen the film, earning it 3.3 billion yen—about 30 million bucks.

By comparison, here are the Japanese box office numbers for the entire runs of the previous Eva films:

End: 2.47 billion
1.0: 2 billion
2.0: 4 billion
3.0: 5.3 billion

So: 3.0+1.0 has already made more than two previous Evangelion movies in its first week than in their entire run, and will likely far surpass the others. Man alive. Still quite a journey to beat Demon Slayer’s record 38.45 billion yen, though!
