The unimaginable has officially happened: Spirited Away has lost its number one spot as the biggest earner in the Japanese box office. The 2002 film now takes second place to Demon Slayer – Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train.

The Demon Slayer movie has been blowing away records, including being the number one movie globally for a while. Even in the midst of a pandemic, it’s made 32,478,895,850 yen (about $313,316,860.34). Spirited Away, on the other hand, has made 31.68 billion yen (about $305,631,216).

Back in November, when it looked as if Demon Slayer might overtake all the top-selling Studio Ghibli titles, a reporter did ask Hayao Miyazaki what he thought. Miyazaki, who was picking up trash at the time as part of his environmentalism, had replied about Demon Slayer, “I don’t think that has anything to do with me. As long as the workplace they make is peaceful, and they’re doing their best—that’s all that matters.”
