These Are Japan’s Most Successful Movies at the Box Office… and They’re Either Anime or Foreign Films

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle hit the Japanese box office on July 18, and it’s already one of the top 10 earners of all time in Japan’s theaters. Previously, there was one live-action Japanese movie in the top 10, Bayside Shakedown 2. Now that it’s dropped to 11th place, the top 10 movies consist of anime or foreign films.

Let’s take a look.

First place goes to Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train, which raked in 40.75 billion yen (about $277,001,719.)

Second place is anime Spirited Away, bringing in 31.68 billion yen.

Third place went to a foreign film: the international Hollywood blockbuster Titanic, which made 27.77 billion yen in Japan.

Then there’s an animated Disney film, with Frozen earning 25.5 billion yen in Japan.

In fifth place we’re back to anime with Your Name, which made 25.17 billion yen

Sixth place is also an anime: One Piece Film: Red, which brought in 20.34 billion yen.

Seventh place is another foreign film, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, bringing in 20.3 billion yen.

Eighth place is back to anime, with Princess Mononoke making 19.7 billion yen.

Ninth place is another anime and Studio Ghibli film: Howl’s Moving Castle made 19.6 billion yen.

Then 10th place is the brand-new Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba–The Movie: Infinity Castle, which so far as made 17.64 billion yen.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle will hit American theaters on September 12. Crunchyroll gave this description for the plot:

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle Plot

Tanjiro Kamado – a boy who joined an organization dedicated to hunting down demons called the Demon Slayer Corps after his younger sister Nezuko was turned into a demon.

While growing stronger and deepening his friendships and bonds with fellow corps members, Tanjiro has battled many demons with his comrades – Zenitsu Agatsuma and Inosuke Hashibira. Along the way, his journey has led him to fight alongside the Demon Slayer Corps’ highest-ranking swordsmen, the Hashira, including Flame Hashira Kyojuro Rengoku aboard the Mugen Train, Sound Hashira Tengen Uzui within the Entertainment District, as well as Mist Hashira Muichiro Tokito and Love Hashira Mitsuri Kanroji at the Swordsmith Village.

As the Demon Slayer Corps members and Hashira engaged in a group strength training program, the Hashira Training, in preparation for the forthcoming battle against the demons, Muzan Kibutsuji appears at the Ubuyashiki Mansion. With the head of the Demon Corps in danger, Tanjiro and the Hashira rush to the headquarters but are plunged into a deep descent to a mysterious space by the hands of Muzan Kibutsuji.

The destination of where Tanjiro and Demon Slayer Corps have fallen is the demons’ stronghold – the Infinity Castle. And so, the battleground is set as the final battle between the Demon Slayer Corps and the demons ignites.
