Winning prizes can be a big part of game shows. VA Satomi Akesaka (Esdeath in Akame ga KILL! and Makoto Ohno in Diary of Our Days at the Breakwater) shared the story of never receiving her prize, only for VA Megumi Ogata (Shinji in Evangelion and Sailor Uranus in Sailor Moon) to pop up with an even more unusual prize she’s been waiting even longer for.
Summer in Japan is a time for ghost stories, and Ohno wrote on her social media:
“It’s summer, so can I share a scary story? The prize of domestic-raised wagyu beef (value of about 20,000 yen [about $135]) that I won last year on Say You to Yoasobi…still…hasn’t arrived…”
She also used a bunch of cow emojis to spell the word “BEEF” in English.
Ogata replied:
“Akesaka…I feel so sorry for you…
Can I share a scary story too? I still haven’t received…the prize I won from Anison AAA…a year’s supply of condoms…”
Ogata had taken part in Anison AAA in 2014. Anison AAA (The As stand for Act Against AIDS) was an anime music event taking part in the fight against AIDS. (Hence, apparently, the choice of condoms as a prize.)
Say You to Yoasobi said publicly that it’s working on getting Ohno the wagyu beef she was promised. Anison AAA, however, is no longer around, meaning it’s unlikely Ogata will get the condoms she’s been waiting eleven years for.
GKIDS has licensed the Evangelion anime franchise and gave this description for Neon Genesis Evangelion:
Neon Genesis Evangelion Plot
Created by Hideaki ANNO, the NEON GENESIS EVANGELION television series is one of the most influential animated series of all time. Since its 1995 premiere in Japan, the story of teenager Shinji Ikari has emerged as one of the most iconic titles in animation history and a global pop culture phenomenon.
A formative title in the animation canon, NEON GENESIS EVANGELION demonstrated the ability of animation to tell stories of philosophy, and intellectual and emotional characters, unlike anything that had been seen before in animation on a global scale.
