It’s been 26 years since Satoshi Kon’s masterpiece anime film Perfect Blue premiered at Canada’s Fantasia Film Festival in 1997. Kon would go on to direct 2002’s Millennium Actress, 2003’s Tokyo Godfathers, 2004’s Paranoia Agents series and 2006’s Paprika at MADHOUSE before his untimely passing in 2010, and now his landmark directorial debut is returning to cinemas in Japan in remastered form.
The 4K remaster is currently planned for screenings across 44 theaters in Japan starting on September 15. Ahead of that, the film will have its premiere at an anniversary event on August 26 at Tokyo’s Shin Bungeiza.
