Three Fall Anime Returning After More Than a Decade

The classics are back, darling

Yesterday, we looked ahead at returning fall anime. Because as much as we love something fresh, we love seeing the old faves just as much. And if you want to talk “old faves,” today’s looks ahead to autumn fit the bill. Each of these is a returning title as well… but each is also coming back after at least ten years!

Check out this trio of anime classics coming back to your screen. Which ones are you most excited about?

Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War

Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War

The anime adaptation of Tite Kubo’s Bleach ended back in 2012, covering the events of the manga’s Lost Agent Arc. Other than the live-action film in 2018 (and the events of spinoff series BURN THE WITCH), that’s the last we’ve seen of this world. Fortunately for fans of the manga who wanted to see its final arc get adapted, the fall anime season has you covered.

Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War was announced in 2020 as part of a 20th anniversary celebration for the series. This fall, we’ll get to see the manga’s finale come to life in all its brutal glory.

Reiwa no Di Gi Charat

Reiwa no Di Gi Charat

Back in 1999, cheerful alien catgirl Dejiko and her spherical sidekick Gema went from shop mascots to anime stars. Along with Puchiko and Rabi~en~Rose (a.k.a. Hikaru Usada), they won over a whole generation of anime fans. The original series inspired a run of remakes, OVAs, and the 2006 spinoff Winter Garden. It’s been 16 years since the last of those; but the group has been making an anniversary comeback, and will be getting a new series in the fall anime season!

Reiwa no Di Gi Charat brings the team back together in an anime miniseries for a new era. Joining them will be some familiar faces, as well as two guardian deity mascots: Broccodess and Bushiroad-no-Mikoto. If the earlier series are any indication, we can expect pure chaos starting this October.

Urusei Yatsura

Lum is back in a new series of Urusei Yatsura!

Rumiko Takahashi’s out-of-this-world rom-com is back for the fall anime season, and we couldn’t be more hype! The last time we saw the stars of Urusei Yatsura animated was technically in a 2008 special made for the It’s a Rumic World exhibition—the first new outing for Lum and Ataru since 1991. But the show’s heyday was in the 1980s, made up of 195 TV episodes and four theatrical films—including Mamoru Oshii’s Beautiful Dreamer, which is just as beautiful and bonkers as you’d expect from him.

Voice acting It Girl Sumire Uesaka takes on the role of Lum Invader, with Hiroshi Kamiya (Attack on Titan‘s Levi) as the hapless Ataru Moroboshi. With an all-star cast and JoJo’s Bizarre Adventures studio David Production at the helm, we’re looking forward to a shockingly good time.
