Back in December, we learned that Please Tell Me! Galko-chan manga author Kenya Suzuki had been arrested on suspicion of importing child pornography from Germany. His manga series had its serialization suspended shortly after, and now Suzuki has been hit with a suspension of his own.
After taking social sanctions into account, the Okazaki branch of the Nagoya District Court settled on sentencing the author to one year and two months in prison. That sentence is suspended for three years, though, so Suzuki will not serve time in prison if he remains on good behavior during that period.
Suzuki admitted to the charges, saying he purchased the books for his own personal interest. He apologized and expressed shame for his actions—indicating that he must rehabilitate himself within society during his suspended sentence period—and does not plan to file an appeal.
The Aichi Prefectural Police arrested the 40-year-old Suzuki in December, and the author admitted to them that he “desperately wanted to acquire nude photos of foreign children that cannot be acquired in Japan.” Ultimately, with those imported books included, 46 books and publications that allegedly contained child pornography were confiscated from Suzuki’s residence in Funabashi, Chiba prefecture.
According to reports, Suzuki allegedly imported the books from Germany in September and October of 2020. Those involved with the case investigated the author on suspicion of violating Japan’s Act on Punishment of Activities Relating to Child Prostitution and Child Pornography, and the Protection of Children.
