The three beautiful boy sword movies in the Toku Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru ~Setsugetsuka~ film trilogy are all coming out this year. The first one, Yuki no Maki (translated as Snow Story) premieres on May 20, and a trailer for it has been released. In it you can hear the opening theme song “Hanamaru-Tayori no Mau Koro ni.”
Yuki no Maki will be followed by Tsuki no Maki (translated as Moon Story), which will come out on July 8. The final movie in the trilogy is Hana no Maki (translated as Flower Story) and it hits Japanese theaters on September 1.
The Touken Ranbu franchise began as a video game in 2015, and has since received everything from anime TV adaptations to manga to stage plays. The basic premise of the series is that it uses famous historical Japanese swords and anthropomorphizes them into beautiful young men. The movies have a new beautiful young man named Yamanbagiri Chōgi, who is being played by Kengo Takanashi.
Yuki no Maki is being produced by Doga Kobo, and is being directed by Takashi Naoya, who previously directed the TV anime Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru. Each movie in the trilogy is being directed by someone different — Tomoaki Koshida of Zoku Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru. is directing the second movie, Tsuki no Maki, and Sumie Noro is directing the third, Hana no Maki.
Yuki no Maki was written by Yuki Nekota, who additionally wrote for the second season of the anime. Character design goes to Junichirō Taniguchi. Kenji Kawai is back to compose the music. Other crew members include: Yukari Yasuda working as art director, Takeshi Takahashi doing art setting, Yuki Itō as the color key artist, and Kentarou Tsubone tasked as an editor.
The Touken Ranbu browser game received an English release in spring 2021, and a few months later a smartphone version came out.
