Kodansha began the Noma Publishing Culture Award last year, where it awarded your name.’s director Makoto Shinkai, author Keigo Higashino, models Mai Shiraishi and Erika Ikuta, and publishers Ribon and Nakayoshi.

This year the award goes to Demon Slayer creator Koyoharu Gotouge, Nintendo’s Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and author Jun Ikeido.

According to Anime News Network, a big part of the award is related to “reinventing publishing.” Since the Demon Slayer manga has gotten more than 100 million copies in circulation, it has in its own way reinvented publishing in Japan. The 22 volumes of the manga have been on the top 22 comics sales positions in the country, according to the Oricon charts.

Anime News Network says that Animal Crossing: New Horizons was also chosen not only for its sales records, but because it “offers potential as a new medium of expression that goes beyond the previous limitations of games.”
