Toshio Suzuki Says Hayao Miyazaki Considers Demon Slayer His Rival

Back in December of last year, the Demon Slayer movie officially surpassed Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away as the #1 movie of all time in the Japanese box office. That was just one of many accomplishments the film has made during its run, so it should come as no surprise that one of the legends of the industry considers it to be his rival.

Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki conveyed as much during an April 25 episode of Fuji TV’s Bokura no Jidai talk show, in which the subject of Demon Slayer‘s success was part of the discussion. According to Suzuki, he previously gave Miyazaki a run-down of the story behind Koyoharu Gotouge’s Demon Slayer, to which the director responded, “Yeah, an anime like that’ll be a success.”

Suzuki went on to quote Miyazaki further, adding that the creator said, “Well, you know, to me, Demon Slayer is my rival.”

While the interview took place well after Demon Slayer: Mugen Train had taken the top spot in the box office, Suzuki didn’t clarify the timing of Miyazaki’s comments. Either way, from the tone of Suzuki’s impersonation, it doesn’t sound like there’s anything but healthy competition fueling this particular rivalry. We’ll just have to wait and see how Miyazaki’s next movie, How Do You Live?, fares when it’s finally complete.
