News recently made its way online that Mia Ikumi, the beloved artist who worked on the Tokyo Mew Mew manga alongside writer Reiko Yoshida from 2000 to 2003, has passed away. According to the official statement from Kodansha’s Nakayoshi manga magazine, Ikumi passed away on March 7 at the age of 42 due to a subarachnoid hemorrhage.
Ikumi made her debut with the Super Doll Licca-chan manga in 1998. In addition to Tokyo Mew Mew, other projects over the years included Repure, Koi Cupid and Only One Wish, as well as the two-part Tokyo Mew Mew Re-Turn that was published in 2020 as part of Nakayoshi magazine’s 65th anniversary celebration.
We’ll all be able to celebrate Ikumi’s work over the years when the Tokyo Mew Mew New anime makes its way to the screen this July. A special print edition of the manga is on the way in Japan to coincide with the premiere, and Ikumi completed new cover illustrations for every volume.
