Suzume Anime Film Ends Phenomenal Japanese Run on May 27

Suzume Surpasses Weathering, Sets Canadian Premiere, Wows China

Makoto Shinkai’s Suzume anime film has made a major splash around the world, and now its time on the big screen in its home country is getting ready to wind to a close. The film opened in Japan back in November 2022, and it will officially end its lengthy theatrical run there on May 27.

The latest update on domestic box office numbers has it at 14.52 billion yen (US$107.95 million) with 10.95 million tickets sold. That puts it in 8th place in the list of all-time highest-grossing anime films in Japan, sandwiched between Ponyo in 7th place and Shinkai’s own Weathering With You in 9th place.

As for the all-time films list in Japan, Suzume is looking to stay in 14th place overall. Suzume‘s worldwide box office gross is sitting just below 300 million bucks at US$299.38 million.

Starting May 12, Japanese theaters will get a “The Final Screening” version of Suzume that includes all 273 cuts retaken for the Blu-ray and DVD release. There will also be a special message from director Makoto Shinkai, giving theatergoers a good excuse to pick up one more ticket and say farewell to the film.
