Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron, Makoto Shinkai’s Suzume and The Super Mario Bros. Movie have just been nominated for several awards, and sometimes they’re in competition with one another.

First off, The Boy and the Heron and The Super Mario Bros. Movie are both up for the Award for Outstanding Producer of Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures from The Producers Guild of America’s 2024 PGA Awards. They’re competing against Elemental, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. We’ll know the winners on February 25.

At the Annie Awards, The Boy and the Heron and Suzume are both nominated for Best Feature, competing against Nimona, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. Jack Black as Bowser from The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Hokuto Matsumura as Souta Munakata from Suzume are nominated for Best Voice Acting – Feature. They’re up against Chloë Grace Moretz from Nimona, Tresi Gazal from Migration, and David Hornsby from Merry Little Batman. We’ll know the winners on February 17.

As for The Art Directors Guild’s ADG Awards, The Boy and the Heron and The Super Mario Bros. Movie are up for Animated Feature Film. Their competition is (at this point you can probably guess pretty well): Elemental, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. We’ll know the winners here on February 10.

The Boy and the Heron recently received a Golden Globe Award, the first time an anime has ever done so. (An anime also won an Astra Award for the first time, and that was with Attack on Titan.) There is also some talk about whether or not any anime will be nominated for an Academy Award. Several anime are eligible, but we won’t know for sure until the actual nominees are announced.
