Multiple news outlets have reported on the Demon Slayer film overtaking various Ghibli movies in box office sales, so that only Spirited Away is still beating it. But because some Ghibli movies received revival screenings this past year, new numbers needed to be crunched for box office totals.
So this past year Spirited Away earned an additional 880 million yen, putting its total at 31.68 billion yen (about $304.5 million). It is currently 1.4 billion yen ahead of Demon Slayer’s box office numbers.
Princess Mononoke went from 19.30 billion yen to 20.18 billion yen, while Tales from Earthsea rose from 7.69 billion yen to 7.84 billion yen. Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind also earned an extra 730 million yen in 2020.
