Six different anime movies have been submitted for Oscar consideration: Earwig and the Witch, Demon Slayer – Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train, Lupin III THE FIRST, ON-GAKU: Our Sound, Ride Your Wave, and A Whisker Away.
In total, 27 films are vying to get nominated for the Animated Feature Film category. Among the non-anime submissions are The Croods: A New Age, Scoob!, Soul, and The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run.
The Academy will narrow the list down to no more than five, and those films will be the official movies running for the award. The nominees will be revealed March 15, and the Oscars are scheduled to take place April 25. The ceremony is occurring a little later this year because of COVID.
Last year 32 animated movies were submitted for consideration for the Animated Feature Film category, including multiple anime films like Weathering with You and Children of the Sea. None of the anime films made it to the final nominees last year.
