Hideaki Anno’s Shin Kamen Rider film opened in Japan on March 18, and a nationwide release is planned for the U.S. via Fathom Events on May 31. Ahead of that one-night-only event, Japan Society NYC announced plans to host the North American premiere for the film inside the non-profit society’s New York City headquarters on May 23.

Here’s what Japan Society Director of Film Peter Tartara had to say about the event:

“We’re honored and humbled to bring Shin Kamen Rider to audiences in North America for the first time. We believe Hideaki Anno’s tribute to one of his childhood heroes will ignite both old and new fans here at Japan Society and all across the country.”

Katsuro Onoue is associate director, Ikki Todoroki is assistant director, Isao Tsuge is costume designer, Taku Iwasaki is composer and Mahiro Maeda, Ikuto Yamashita and Yutaka Izubuchi are all credited as designers.

Shin Kamen Rider stars Tasuku Emoto, Shinya Tsukamoto, Toru Tezuka and Suzuki Matsuo, among others, with Minami Hamabe playing Ruriko Midorikawa and Sosuke Ikematsu playing Takeshi Hongo/Kamen Rider.

Here’s an earlier trailer for the Fathom Events screenings:

Synopsis:

Hongo Takeshi awakens to discover he has been transformed into a grasshopper-hybrid cyborg. Becoming the Masked Rider, he must fight the mysterious evil organization SHOCKER to protect all of mankind. Shin Kamen Rider is Anno Hideaki’s ode to the legendary tokusatsu franchise, Japan’s biggest hero, and his dearest childhood icon. Go! Go! Let’s go!
