Last week saw the announcement of Oshi no Ko wedding dresses and a tuxedo, but this is far from the only otaku franchise involved with weddings! In fact, at last weekend’s Pokémon Go Fest, which attracted more than 50,000 people, a wedding took place for a couple who originally met while playing the game.
“So I was trying to catch’em all, and I caught a soul mate in the process,” said Sandra Dorgo to ABC News, which covered the story.
Their relationship goes back four years. Sandra, a nurse, posted in a Pokémon Go community chat local to her home in Ontario, Canada, looking to do a trade for Corsola. Les Dorgo, a firefighter who also lives in Ontario, had Corsola.
“Hey, let’s make a date of this,” Les recalls saying at the time. “Let’s meet up, we’ll make a trade.”
They traveled to places like Los Angeles and France together to catch Pokémon. From LA they went to Mexico, and said they got weird looks at customs when they explained their reason for travel. Together they’ve caught more than 600,000 Pokémon!
Eventually they got engaged. People behind Pokémon Go heard about it, and they volunteered to not only fly them to the Pokémon Go Fest for free, but to host their actual wedding there!
Little tweaks were made to the wedding to include the franchise. For instance, when the bride walked down the aisle, a piano rendering of Pokémon’s theme song played instead of more traditional music. Along with a priest and their family, there was a person in a Pikachu costume. And their cake was naturally Pokémon-themed, with the characters Chansey and Squirtle on top. Chansey is wearing a nurse’s hat and Squirtle has donned a fireman’s helmet.
“It was magical,” gushed Sandra.
Best wishes to the newlyweds!
