New VTuber Gawr Gura is Taking a Bite out of YouTube

Hololive EN's Gawr Gura

Western fans were getting into the VTuber scene even before Hololive’s official expansion into English-language content, so YouTube was ready when new digital stars premiered. Chomping her way to the front of the pack is hoodied Atlantean Gawr Gura, with a fanbase nearly half a million strong after just a week.

Gawr Gura is one of the five members of Hololive EN’s first generation, along with Watson Amelia, Ninomae Ina’nis, Takanashi Kiara, and Mori Calliope. All five channels are going strong with at least a quarter of a million subscribers in the earliest of days. But there’s something about this new baby shark that’s catching people’s attention in particular.

Gawr Gura arrives on YouTube

So who is Gawr Gura? She’s apparently over 9,000… years old, that is. Though whenever you ask her, she gives a different precise age. (Apparently it gets hard to remember after 5,000.) She loves salmon, hates hot sand, and her biggest fear is… “loud stomak.” We know the feeling. As for why she’s here with us and not back home in Atlantis? In Gura’s own words: “It’s so boring down there LOLOLOL!”

You’ll primarily find the girls of Hololive EN running live game streams — with three of them collaborating on Surgeon Simulator 2.

Visiting Gawr Gura’s official Twitter shows just how much attention she’s getting from fans. Much of her feed is fan art (and all of it is adorable). Meanwhile, watching her streams shows a major influx of superchats as she’s gaming and chatting.

So, what else can we expect from the sharp-toothed sharky star in the future? She’s done some singing, mostly hosted let’s plays, and taken some time out to talk to fans. Hopefully, we’ll get to see Hololive EN’s activities evolve the way the Japanese side has. We’re also looking forward to seeing more of Gawr Gura just being her sharky self, with or without a video game being played at the time.

If you’re looking to support the activities of Hololive EN, be sure to give your favorites a follow on YouTube… and if you have the extra cash, drop them a superchat! Extra support means the likelihood of more great content from the company’s new raft of virtual stars. In the meantime, as long as Gawr Gura is streaming, we will definitely go in the water again.
