Nagoya Holds 80s Anime Film Festival This May

Nagoya Holds 80s Anime Film Festival This MayNagoya, the major Japanese city between Tokyo and Kyoto, has a reputation for being, well, less interesting than those two other cities, to put it mildly. But here’s some news that has me actually wanting to visit.

From May 16 to 22, Nagoya’s Midland Square Cinema will host the Domanaka Anime Film Festival, which will feature anime films originally released back in the good ol’ 1980s. The lineup includes Ashita no Joe 2, Adieu Galaxy Express 999, two Legend of Galactic Heroes films, Minky Momo: Yume no naka no Rondo, Locke the Superman, Crusher Joe, Five Star Stories, Dagger of Kamui, and the 2023 Rintaro-directed short “Nezumikozō Jirokichi.”

A couple of these are technically OVAs or released in the 1990s, but let’s leave our pedantry aside and just dig this old-school lineup, shall we?

The festival will also include talks featuring folks like mechanical designer Kunio Okawara (Brave series). Okawara also drew the poster for the event. 80s anime fans, get thee to Nagoya. And don’t forget to try the misokatsu.
