Love Live! Inspires First School Idol Musical

love live!

Another anime is making the transition from the screen to the stage, and this one should go very smoothly, because it’s Love Live!. Despite the fact that the Love Live! project has been raising idols for over a decade, this will mark its first appearance on the stage as a musical featuring a brand new story set in the series’ universe.

The story of the musical—which comes from Love Live! creator Sakurako Kimino—will center on a pair of students from two fictional schools in the Kansai region, Takizakura Girls Academy in Osaka prefecture and Tsubakisakuhana Girls High School in Hyogo prefecture. Screenplay writer and director Kouki Kishimoto will bring the stage event to life with the help of composer Ryota Kojima at ARKS International, both of whom worked together on the earlier Kiki’s Delivery Service musical.

Love Live! School Idol Musical is set to kick off performances at the New National Theatre in Tokyo from December 10 to December 15, followed by performances in Osaka’s Umeda Arts Theater from January 25 to January 29, 2023. This certainly continues to support the notion that anime stage plays and musicals are on the rise!

Crunchyroll is currently streaming the second season of the Love Live! Superstar!! anime, which it describes like so:

The first students have arrived at Yuigaoka Girls’ High School, a new academy built on the crossroads of Omotesando, Harajuku, and Aoyama. With no history, no upperclassmen to rely on, and no name to speak of, this school’s totally starting from scratch! In the midst of this, a team of five girls led by Kanon Shibuya discover “school idols.” —I love singing! I really do! And I want to accomplish something with it! So the hopes of these stars, still small in stature, begin to accumulate…and so begins the “School Idol Project” of five girls with a blank slate and infinite potential.
