Fumi Yoshinaga’s What Did You Eat Yesterday? manga—which follows a gay couple in Tokyo who like to eat home-cooked meals—inspired a live-action TV drama in April 2019, and now it’s getting ready for seconds. TV Tokyo announced plans for the second season, which is now set to make its way to screens in Japan this October.
Lead cast members Hidetoshi Nishijima (Drive My Car) and Seiyou Uchino (Van Hohenheim in Fullmetal Alchemist) will reprise their respective roles as Shiro Kakei and Kenji Yabuki in the second season, which will find them entering a new stage in their lives.
Here’s what Nishijima said about the new season:
“With Uchino-san, and the regular and guest members, I hope to carefully depict how the people in this story experience what we have experienced in the real world, and how they grow old and change little by little, just like us. The members are working hard and earnestly, just as we have in the past, so please look forward to it.”
Uchino commented, as well:
“I believe that Shiro-san and Kenji in ‘Nanitabe’ will be entering a new phase of their lives. It would be wonderful if we could feel the vague and gentle world with all of you.”
Vertical publishes the manga in English and describes it:
A hard-working, middle-aged gay couple in Tokyo come to enjoy the finer moments of life through food. After long days at work, either in the law firm or the hair salon, Shiro and Kenji will always have down time together by the dinner table, where they can discuss their troubles, hash out their feelings, and enjoy delicately prepared home-cooked meals!
