Kenjiro Tsuda has voiced the Golden Kamuy anime’s Hyakunosuke Ogata since 2018, and now he’ll be lending his talents to the live-action film. The official website revealed that Tsuda is officially in place as the film’s narrator, which surprised many of the attendees of a recent preview event in Japan.

A visual was released along with the news:

Tsuda had the following to say about the voiceover role:

“To be honest, I was very hesitant about participating. I had played the role of Hyakunosuke Ogata in the anime version, and I wondered if I would interfere with the worldview of the live-action version by narrating the story. Would I confuse the audience? I thought about many things.

“At the same time, however, I thought that Golden Kamuy has a power and scale that blows away such small things. Yes, this is a work that mixes seriousness and comedy, good and evil, and runs with intense energy. That’s why it’s okay. It should swallow everything and shine with intense light. And above all, I love Golden Kamuy. I am very honored to have participated as a narrator in this film. Please don’t think about the details and come to the theater. I am sure you will enjoy it.”

The live-action Golden Kamuy film opens in Japan on Friday, January 19.

The film is directed by Shigeaki Kubo (HiGH & LOW series) and stars Kento Yamazaki as Saichi Sugimoto and Anna Yamada as Asirpa.

Here’s how Viz describes Golden Kamuy:

In the early 20th century, Russo-Japanese War veteran Saichi Sugimoto searches the wilderness of the Japanese frontier of Hokkaido for a hoard of hidden gold. With only a cryptic map and a native Ainu girl to help him, Saichi must also deal with every murderous cutthroat, bandit and rogue who knows about the treasure!

“Immortal Sugimoto,” a survivor of the assault on 203 Meter Hill during the Russo-Japanese War, now scratches out a meager existence in the post-war gold rush in the wild frontier of Hokkaido. A chance encounter in the woods puts a map to a hidden fortune of Ainu gold in his hands, but Sugimoto is not the only interested party, and everyone who knows about the gold will kill to possess it!
