Doctor Elise: The Royal Lady with the Lamp, a series of web novels and manhwa from South Korea, is getting an anime adaptation.

The story, by yuin, is about an evil empress who gets executed, is brought back to life in the modern day as a surgeon, then dies again and gets brought back as Elise ten years before her execution. Whew.

The anime will be animated at Maho Film, directed by Kumiko Habara (I’m the Villainess, So I’m Taming the Final Boss) and written by Deko Akao (Komi Can’t Communicate).

The original web novels were serialized from 2015 to 2016, and the manhwa, illustrated by mini, ran from 2017 to 2021. It was previously published in English by Tappytoon, which describes it like this:

Dr. Song, the youngest professor at the leading College of Medicine in Korea, was a royal brat of a princess in her previous life. But just as she’s about to meet an untimely death over the ocean, she wakes up as Princess Elise once again?! Enlightened with the medical knowledge of a master surgeon, is this her chance to mend her past relationships and heal an ailing empire, or is fate sealed to repeat itself?

(Note: while the official English release of the manhwa is titled Doctor Elise, the Japanese key art reads Surgeon Elise. Time will tell which title will be used for the English title of the anime.)
