It was only a matter of time, and JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 has officially zipped past another major box office milestone in Japan. After a little over a month in theaters, the anime film adaptation of Gege Akutami’s prequel manga has exceeded 10 billion yen as of Friday, February 4, putting it higher in the rankings of the biggest Japanese films ever.
The numbers as of Sunday put the film at 10,456,322,400 yen (about US$91.04 million) with 7,603,732 tickets sold. It is now the 10th anime film to ever cross the 10 billion yen threshold, and has even made it slightly more successful than Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time‘s impressive box office total of 10.23 billion yen to take the #9 spot in that category.
On top of these numbers, JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 is now ranked as the 34th highest-grossing film of all time in the Japanese box office. It sits comfortably between 1996’s Independence Day in 33rd place and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King in 35th.

Yuta Okkotsu is a nervous high school student who is suffering from a serious problem—his childhood friend Rika has turned into a Curse and won’t leave him alone. Since Rika is no ordinary Curse, his plight is noticed by Satoru Gojo, a teacher at Jujutsu High, a school where fledgling exorcists learn how to combat Curses. Gojo convinces Yuta to enroll, but can he learn enough in time to confront the Curse that haunts him?
