One Piece Film Red and JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 Sit Atop Japan’s Box Office Rankings for 2022

It’s been a huge year for anime films, from December 2021’s JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 to November 2022’s Suzume. Those are just two of four films that sit atop the list of Japan’s top 10 highest-grossing domestic films in 2022, and both JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 and One Piece Film Red managed to overtake everything else, including foreign films like Top Gun: Maverick.

The top four domestic films in 2022 in Japan were all anime films, including One Piece Film Red at 18.78 billion yen, JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 at 13.8 billion yen, Suzume at 10 billion yen and Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween at 9.78 billion yen. 

Here’s the full top 10 domestically for Japan:

  1. One Piece Film Red – 18.78 billion yen
  2. Jujutsu Kaisen 0 – 13.8 billion yen 
  3. Suzume no Tojimari – 10.0 billion yen
  4. Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween – 9.78 billion yen 
  5. Kingdom 2: Haruka Naru Daichi e – 5.16 billion yen
  6. Shin Ultraman – 4.44 billion yen 
  7. 99.9 Keiji Senmon Bengoshi The Movie – 3.01 billion yen 
  8. Yomei 10-nen – 3.0 billion yen 
  9. Chinmoku no Parade – 2.97 billion yen 
  10. Confidence Man JP Eiyūhen – 2.89 billion yen 

Top Gun Maverick came out on top of the highest-grossing foreign films in Japan in 2022, and its 13.5 billion yen gross puts it just below JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 but above Suzume for the year.
