Nine days until the release of the new live-action Lupin III film in Japan, and the hype machine is in full swing. You can now swing by your local Newdays or Kiosk convenience store and pick up some Lupin III bread.
The whole thing is based on a pretty dumb Japanese pun. “Pan” is Japanese for bread (derived originally from Portuguese, FYI) and Lupin is pronounced “Rupan.” Get it? Ru… pan…
Anyway, there are five different flavors on offer, representing the five main characters Lupin, Jigen, Goemon, Fujiko and everyone’s favorite Zenigata. The packaging features illustrations of the actors in their respective roles, illustrated by none other than Lupin creator Monkey Punch. The original manga-ka drawing actors dressed up as his characters… kind of throws your brain for a loop.
Anyway, we popped over to our local Newdays and grabbed the Fujiko variety, “Berry Berry,” and chowed down. It tasted like bread.
Update 9/8/14: The movie is out and our review of the Lupin III live-action flick is here.
