It Wasn’t an April Fools’ Prank: Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis Gets In-Game Event with Characters as High Schoolers

A few weeks ago Square Enix took to social media to share the announcement of Rival Fantasy: Ever Crisis Academy Seven, where the iconic characters from Final Fantasy VII are put in a Japanese high school. Because this was announced on the eve of April Fools’ Day, many people interpreted it simply as a joke. However, Square Enix has since reasserted this is something they’re actually going forward with.

However, it won’t be its own game. As an alternative, it will be an in-game event for Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis, and you can start playing it on April 30. Take a look at this trailer for it.

Rival Fantasy: Ever Crisis Academy Seven Trailer

In the game, you are a student teacher working at Municipal Seventh High School in Midogaru (referencing Midgar). There you’ll meet fellow teacher Barret, who teaches P.E., as well as students Cloud, Tifa, Aerith, Sephiroth and Angeal. Sephiroth and Angeal specifically attend Shinra School of Medicine High School, and Aerith is referred to as a delinquent leader.

Square Enix gave this description for the in-game:

Rival Fantasy: Ever Crisis Academy Seven Summary

The City of Midgar, a short distance from the bustling metropolis, is known as home for academics. Yet beneath its refined exterior lies a hidden world where young delinquents fight day and night, their lives governed by one rule: might makes right.

At Midgar Seventh High School, Cloud wields his bat, seeking ever-stronger rivals in his quest to become Midgar’s Brawler: First Class. However, Cloud’s childhood friend Tifa is wary of his reckless path and hatches a plan to reform the combative youth. Behind the scenes, Midgar’s top brawler, Zack, and the school’s “big bad” Aerith are up to trouble of their own. All of this sets the stage for the ultimate showdown, where the pride and spirit of these young students will be on the line!
