We knew the Gintama THE FINAL movie was off to a strong start when it actually managed to dethrone Demon Slayer: Mugen Train during its historic, record-breaking run. Sure, it was just for a week, but it was enough to show the strength of Gintoki and co., and now their latest adventure has cemented itself as the highest-grossing anime film in the entire Gintama series.
That means Gintama THE FINAL managed to beat the similarly final-sounding Gintama: The Movie: The Final Chapter: Be Forever Yorozuya. You can see Gintoki himself as satisfied with his accomplishment as ever thanks to a new celebratory illustration by character designer Shinji Takeuchi.
The total as of February 28 has Gintama THE FINAL bringing in 1.74 billion yen, which adds up to about $16.3 million. That’s compared to 2013’s Be Forever Yorozuya, which earned 1.7 billion yen ($15.93 million) during its run. THE FINAL just expanded further on February 27, so look for that gap to widen a bit in the coming weeks.
