au 5g’s UNLIMITED REALITY is comprised of various VR/AR attractions, and the latest ties in with the recently-launched Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 CG anime. The event was supposed to go live in Shibuya, but as a result of COVID-19 concerns, the entire thing has been moved to online apps. That opens it up to worldwide fans, who can all take a moment to go on VR adventures with the Major from the safety of their homes.
The campaign aims to immerse players in the Ghost in the Shell world with a series of social media programs, videos, and apps, with a VR adventure called Shibuya Mixed Reality Mission at the heart of it. This mission mixes footage of Shibuya with special effects and CG characters from Ghost in the Shell, giving participants a chance to take out hackers with Motoko Kusanagi and Batou.
If you have a VR headset, you can check out the video below for the full experience. It’s also viewable in 360 viewing mode in browsers and on mobile devices, though, and subs are available via closed captions.
There’s also an online scavenger hunt, during which various Twitter accounts will link to AR pages where players can take photos of Section 9 members. Collecting all six and sharing them with the contest’s hashtag will enter you to win one of 100 F-LAGSTUF-F Ghost in the Shell shirts.
More info is available on the official website.
You can even virtually cosplay as Section 9 members with the new Instagram filter, complete with its own contest that has the color-separated posters below as a prize.
Let’s not forget about Tachikoma. The iconic spider tank can be brought into the real world through an AR app, pictured below.
Once everything clears up, UNLIMITED REALITY still plans to run its program in Shibuya later.
