Evangelion 3.0 Promotion Continues Apace

Though the release of Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo, the latest in the series of Evangelion reboot films, is months away, the hype machine is in full swing here in Tokyo.

On August 21st, toymaker Banpresto released a new series of Evangelion figurines and merchandise. The different “prizes,” which include PVC models of Rei, Asuka, and Mari, as well as branded towels and cell phone straps, are awarded at random with the purchase of a 600 yen ticket.

Meanwhile, a new teaser trailer for the film, released a few weeks ago, serves as further proof that the Evangelion name alone is enough garner ticket sales. The teaser, which clocks in at one minute twenty seconds, shows an intricate, wireframe piano being played from a variety of angles.

Classical music has always played a large part in the Evangelion universe, but this latest trailer, which eschews any robot or character footage whatsoever, no doubt frustrated fans looking for a new glimpse of the movies and delighted theorists who believe the new series of films is a money grab/ego trip/elaborate joke by series creator Hideaki Anno.

Other Evangelion-related products released in the past few months include an Evangelion-branded Schick razor and a smartphone from Japanese carrier NTT Docomo, which replicates the feel of the series’ NERV computer compound.
