Boogiepop Doesn’t Laugh Anime Will Begin With 1-Hour Special

boogiepop doesn't laughThe supernatural mysteries of author Kouhei Kadano and illustrator Kouji Ogata‘s Boogiepop novels—which previously inspired a 2000 TV anime—are set to return this January with Boogiepop Doesn’t Laugh. Shingo Natsume directs the latest adaptation at anime studio MADHOUSE, and a new update revealed more info about the premiere.

When the series kicks off on January 4, it will do so with an hour-long special featuring both the first and second episodes. New episodes will follow on a regular weekly schedule on multiple networks after that, and AbemaTV will handle digital distribution in Japan.

Here’s last month’s trailer from Kadokawa:

North American publisher Seven Seas Entertainment describes the novels:

Who am I? My name is Boogiepop…

There is an urban legend that children tell about a shinigami that can release people from the pain they are suffering. This “Angel of Death” has a name–Boogiepop. And the legends are true. Boogiepop is real.

When a rash of disappearances involving female students breaks out at Shinyo Academy, the police and faculty assume they just have a bunch of runaways on their hands. Yet Nagi Kirima knows better. Something mysterious and foul is afoot. Is it Boogiepop or something even more sinister…?
