It was just earlier this month that we were sharing the news that Mamoru Oshii and Yoshitaka Amano’s Angel’s Egg would be receiving a 4K remaster in Japan. This week, GKIDS went ahead and announced its acquisition of the North American rights to the 1985 OVA, which will mark its 40th anniversary in 2025.
GKIDS didn’t offer too many details, but the distributor did say it plans to screen the 4K restoration of Angel’s Egg in North American theaters. Beyond that, GKIDS’ North American rights include a release on physical media.
Tokuma Shoten is behind the remaster, and is using “a new scan of a 35mm film print of the anime.” Oshii is involved with this process and is supervising the work.
Oshii and Amano came up with the basic story, then Oshii penned the script. He helmed the project as the director at Studio DEEN. The task of art direction went to Amano. It was produced by multiple people: Hiroshi Hasegawa, Masao Kobayashi, Mitsunori Miura, and Yutaka Wada. Credit for composing the music goes to Yoshihiro Kanno.
Here’s how GKIDS describes it:
In an underwater city, a young girl takes care of a large egg she holds carefully in her arms – a treasure that she believes is an angel’s egg. A boy with a gun arrives in search of a bird he saw in his dream. At first it seems as if feelings of sympathy are developing between the two. Then, one night, the boy crushes her precious egg.
