Anyone who’s been to an anime convention knows that when you get thousands of otaku in one place at one time, cell phone reception goes down the drain.
So in a bit of good news for visitors to this December’s Comic Market, it appears Japanese cell service provider Softbank (newish owners of Sprint) will be serving up Wi-Fi at the event.
Specifically, they’ll be blasting Wi-Fi signal out of trucks emblazoned with the characters from Kuroko’s Basketball, the popular series about a guy named Kuroko playing basketball.
What’s so interesting about the internet signal at an event I’m not going to, you ask? Well, keep in mind at this time last year, a Kuro no Basuke-hating madman was at large, sending potentially lethal chemicals to anyone remotely associated with Kuroko’s manga-ka Tadatoshi Fujimaki. Several stores pulled their Kuroko’s merchandise, fearing it might be tainted, and several Kuroko’s Basketball events were canceled.
The suspect, however, was finally apprehended, and it became safe for Kuroko’s Basketball to reemerge at events like Comiket.
So Softbank’s Kuro no Basuke trucks mean more than just good internet connections: they’re a symbol Kuroko’s is back.
P.S. Softbank rival NTT Docomo will be providing their own KanColle-branded Wi-Fi trucks. No big meaning there we can think of.
